The Saint Bernard is easily trainable, intelligent, and has a pleasant stable temperment. Because of their large size they are excellent for children. The Saint Bernard has no fear of being squeezed to hard by a toddler or of being squished by a inadverted tumble. The Saint Bernard is very easy going and they don't try to exert their dominance over other household pets. They have been known to let a toy dog or cat rule the roost. You always want the Saint to know that you are the boss you should start training the puppy from day one. Once your Saint has passed the puppy stage which can take up to two years, it is usualy very lazy some say a couch potato. Since they have a very low activity level they will not get "stir crazy" in an apartment. It will need to have several short walks a day though no more than 10 of 15 min. If you have a fenced in back yard the need for walks will be less. By the age of 4 months the Saint should have good control of potty training if you have worked very consistently and in a positive manner with it. The Saint is a very trainable dog not a hardhead. They are actually soft and get there feelilngs hurt easily. There is no such thing as a "dry mouth" some just drool less than others but most drool when the eat, drink, and exrecise. The Saint Bernard puppy is a little different from other puppies since it is a large breed it grows extremely fast. For this reason many veterinarians recommend that the puppy should be fed puppy food only until 6 months of age, which at that time it should be switched over to premium adult dog food. It is very important not to over feed your puppy while it is still growing! Three feedings a day is sufficient (morning, noon and evening). Most vets recommend giving the puppy vitamins to make sure the puppy is getting everything it needs to be strong and healthy.

When Saints are under 1 yr old you do not want to make them walk if they do not want to. There legs grow so fast and are not fully developed until after 1 yr old they have a hard time keeping up with their growth but there legs are very sensitive and you can cause them to have problems or even arthritis in their legs if you force them to walk. They should exercise only when they want to and not be forced to. After they are over 2 yrs old they will glady walk with you.
